This is All India Radio. The news, read by [...]: A Symphony of Kumbakonam with a Murphy Transistor

This is All India Radio. The news, read by [...] these words still echo in my mind as I reflect on my younger days in the enchanting town of Kumbakonam. My father and I and our family lived in our humble abode filled with the aroma of freshly brewed filter coffee and the sounds of our beloved Murphy Transistor.

A Shared Connection

Our connection was rich and diverse: lively news bulletins, thrilling cricket matches, melodious movie songs (especially Mukesh, Rafi), captivating dramas, and the soul-stirring Carnatic music that my father especially loved. These were not just sounds but the symphonies of our life.

Historical Moments

Through our Murphy Transistor, we lived the joy of Gavaskar's centuries, the anticipation and shock of the 1977 elections – with Congress losing royally in UP, MP, Bihar, and Rajasthan, leading to a dramatic political upheaval. We also felt the excitement of MGR sweeping the assembly in 1977 and1980, the profound sadness of Indira Gandhi's assassination in 1984, and the triumph of the 1983 World Cup. These events were more than news; they were a part of our shared history, experienced together.

The Sound of Cricket and Film

Cricket united us in excitement, and movie songs added a melody to our lives. Together, we'd explore different genres and share our thoughts late into the night.

Carnatic Connection

Carnatic music resonated deeply with my father. He found solace in those timeless compositions, and I often found myself drawn into his world, a world filled with beauty and emotion.

A Lost Connection

Time moved on, and the winds of change carried me to bustling Bangalore. The Murphy Transistor, our shared treasure, was forgotten at a repair shop, lost to the tides of time.

A Heartfelt Tribute

Now, I look back at those memories with a sense of nostalgia and gratitude. My father is no more, but the lessons he taught remain, and the memories are as vivid as ever.

An Eternal Symphony

The story of my father and my Murphy Transistor is a celebration of a relationship enriched by diverse interests and timeless wisdom. The transistor might be gone, and my father may no longer be with me, but the symphony of Kumbakonam continues to play in my heart.

It's a melodious tribute to a time when life was simpler, and connections were deeper. A reminder that the most profound bonds in life are often forged through simple shared experiences, and those connections continue to resonate, long after the music has faded
